That from which birth etc of this (universe) !.

Bhagavatam is is one of the greatest books of bhakti tradition. Bhagavatam is also one part of our three fold focus namely Ramayanam , Bhagavatam , Athato Brhamajignyasa .

In Bhagavatam we have started with Dasama Skandha and we are fortunate to have completed the ninety chapters of Dasam skandha.

Bhagavatam means that which deals with Bhagavan , the Supreme being. Its subject is pure love for Bhagavan told in the form of many stories. There is an underlying philosophical tone.

We have three underlying thoughts about philosophy of Bhagavatam

It starts with the very first verse in Bhagavatam ;

जन्माद्यस्य यतो अन्वयाद्
इतरतश्चार्थेष्वभिज्ञः स्वराट्
तेन ब्रह्म ह्रुदि य आदिकवये
मुह्यन्ति यत्सूरयः ।
तेजोवारिमृदां यथा
विनिमयो यत्र त्रिसर्गो मृषा
धाम्ना स्वेन सदा निरस्तकुहकं
सत्यं परं धीमही ||

"janmaadyasya yato" ... he from whom the creation , sustenance . and dissolution of the universe takes place ; he who is both material cause of it and the instrumental cause of it; he who is omniscient who is the only one having mastery being the one independent entity; he who illuminated the mind of Brahma with vedic revelation ; he whose wisdom is the wonder of even the great sages; he in whom the worlds three gunas subsist in reality without affecting him in the least ; he in whose consciousness there is no place or anything else - on that supreme truth let us meditate !!

The last line of the sloka is..

" सत्यं परं धीमही "

"Let us meditate upon that truth !!"

Satya param dhimahi is the tag line of Bhagavatam.

Question would be - What is that "param satyam" on which we should be meditating ?

The answer is - " janmaadya yatah " from which the universe has come - that is the param satyam on which to meditate.

According to Upanishads that source is Brahman.

This line satyam param dhimahi ! ( let us meditate on that truth )
sounds very much like the gayatri mantra :

"bhargo devasya dhimahi !"

which means we meditate on the glory of the divine :

Because of this , this verse namely the very first verse of Bhagavatam is called the gayatri of Bhagavatam.

The second stream of thought is about its linkage to Brahmasutras

This first sloka of Bhagavatam starts with janmaadyasya yatah. This line is also the second line of the Brahmasutra ;

The first line of Brahma Sutra being Athato Brahma jignyaasa which says let us meditate on Brahman ;

The very next question for a such a statement is - who is that Brahman? . The answer comes in the form of the second line - janmaadyasya yatah - from whom the universe has come, that Brahman ; Let us meditate on that Brahman.

There is another thought;

After listing several features of that Brahman - he who is both material cause of it and the instrumental cause of it; he who is omniscient who is the only one having mastery being the one independent entity; he who illuminated the mind of Brahma with vedic revelation ; he whose wisdom is the wonder of even the great sages ; Vyasa says ( in the first sloka):

"Yatra trisargo mrusha" - the one in whom the trisarga is not unreal !

The idea that this universe which has come from Him , who is the Supreme reality - makes the universe also real ; Thus Bhakthi does not look upon the universe as unreal ( maya) which happens to be the line of Advaita

Finally Bhagavatam also echoes the famous upanishadic utterance

'ekam sat viprah bahudha vadanti' - Truth is one but sages call it variously !

This is reflected in the following verse of Bhagavatam :

वदन्ति तत्तत्वविदस्तत्वं
यज् ज्ञानमद्वयम् ।
ब्रह्मेति परमात्मेति
भगवानिति शब्द्यते || ( 1.2.11)

The knowers of truth declare that truth is one and the same non dual consciousness is called Brahma, paramatma, Bhagavan etc .

Reiterating the thought that "aham brahmasmi" "I am the brahman" - "tat tvam asi" "That thou art" essentially that I am the oneself in all - we have the teaching of Kapila third skandha>

अथ मां सर्वभूतेषु
भूतात्मानं कृतालयम् ।
अर्हयेद्दानमानाभ्यां
मैत्र्याभिन्नेन चक्षुसा ॥

Therefore worship me in all beings - for I am one self in all and made a temple for me in them - worship me through daana ; worship me through maana - through respect for the one served ; Worship me with maitreya - through an attitude of friendliness ; not through abhinnena chakshusaa - not with an an eye of separateness !

The first sloka of Bhagavatam thus lays the Vedantic foundations of Bhagavatam and it is reiterated at a number of places .

Kasarabada.org welcomes all !

This is the 212th issue of kasarabada.org.

This week we are starting another venture - to bring Balakanda in its entirety as we did with Sundarakanda

Specifically this week we are bringing Samkshipta Ramayanam - in all its glory !. The first chapter of Balakanda or the first chapter of entire Ramayana so to say, has a brief narrative of the complete Ramayana story . In a hundred slokas of the first chapter of Balakanda, we have Narada narrate the story of Rama, a king of Ikshwaku line ! The Narada narrative is in response to Valmiki's question which forms the first five slokas of Balakanda . Valmiki wanted to know as to who is the best person ( Nara ) among the whole world . Narada's reply covers the complete story of Ramayana in the subsequent ninety five slokas.

We are delighted to bring the chapter 1 in its entirety , the hundred slokas !! As stated it is also called Samkshipta Ramayanam . We are bringing Samkshipta Ramayanam in Sanskrit Devanagari script , as well as Telugu and Kannada script with Telugu and English translations. We will be adding the same as down loads.

Compressing the whole Ramayana into ninety five slokas requires being very brief and in fact the slokas are as cryptic as the Sutras of Sanskrit lore. The translation necessarily follows the compressed style of the story. To some extent it may sound stilted , yet it is beautiful.

The regular features as usual continue !!

For Telugu lovers - the Samkshipta Ramayanamu in Telugu in katha form ( gadyamu) as well as with Sanskrit slokas are made available.

What is on the kasarabada.org?

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We now have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have now all 68 chapters of Sundarakanda and also complete bouquet of articles on Ramayana. These articles include "Role models from Ramayana" namely Srirama , Sita , Hanuman , Jataayu , Sabari , Bharata , Lakshmana. Apart from these there were some special articles namely The Message of Ramayana , Going to the Forests and about Hanuman in "In the thick of the Battle " . Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. We have also added some downloads specifically for the Samkshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as a prose story !!,.

One More Thing

Bhajagovindam

"O Fool it is not the grammar rules .. !!"

భజగోవిందం భజగోవిందం
గోవిందం భజ మూఢమతే |
సంప్రాప్తే సన్నిహితే కాలే
నహి నహి రక్షతి దుకృఞ్ కరణే ||

भजगोविंदं भजगोविंदं गोविंदं भज मूढमते ।
संप्राप्ते सन्निहिते काले नहि नहि रक्षति दुकृञ् करणे ॥

"Pray to Govinda . Pray to Govinda. O fool when the appointed time comes , the grammar rules surely will not save you" .

That is the signature tune of the most popular sloka namely " Bhajagovindam" from Shankaracharya. Shri Sankaracharya whose genius resulted in the establishment of Advaita placing the Hindu philosophy on the strongest foundations , never let his genius rest on those intellectual efforts. He delivered simple treatises for the common man. Bhajagovindam is one which encompasses the fundamentals of Vedanta in simple musical notes. The slokas are so musical that people learn the same without actually imbibing the genius embedded in the slokas themselves.

It is true that nothing matters when the appointed time comes. It is the most probably also a time when the futility of chasing the material dreams finally dawns , though at that moment it is too late !

It is a simple reminder to every one that there is more to life than learning grammar or chasing material things .

It is a simple reminder to every one to realize or attain that state of purity and perfection in this life so that when the appointed time comes, one can face that with an equanimity of having done his duty.

Attaining that state of purity and perfection in this life is not necessarily an intellectual exercise learnt at the feet of an accomplished Guru. It can be through a simple Bhakti marg , or performing ones duty to its own perfection !

The disdainful mention of the grammar rules is not so much about the grammar. It is more about the human tendency to pursue that education which drives one towards the materialistic dreams. For several it is an endless chase. For some chase is itself the end . For several looking like not chasing such dreams may make them exposed to social ridicule and creating an urgent need to chase !!

It is difficult to say " no more" and stay away from the temptation . Before one can say no more, one has to over come not only ones own insatiable need , but has to over come several dependant dreams too !

But it is certainly possible.

This is not preaching renunciation.

This is to encourage one to remain active in generating wealth but use it for others.

If that is our goal then we have certainly imbibed Sankara's Baja Govindam :

సంప్రాప్తే సన్నిహితే కాలే
నహి నహి రక్షతి దుకృఞ్ కరణే ||

"When the appointed time comes the grammar rules do not save us"
